OPINION
Conor Hourihane is a such a strange player sum up for Aston Villa fans. The Irishman has the most assists of any Villa player in the league this season, but he consistently underperforms and has failed to impress for several weeks now. The most common argument levelled at the midfielder is that he offers very little apart from a decent dead ball delivery, and when that is taken out of the equation, as it was against Reading, it is hard to see what he brings to the side. Admittedly, he has had to endure being played out of position a lot, and doesn’t look particularly comfortable in that deeper role that he is so often forced to occupy, but his general lack of energy and quality isn’t dictated by his positioning, and it’s surely a matter of time before he is given the boot by Dean Smith. Many Villa fans are shocked that it hasn’t happened already, and in fairness to Hourihane, Smith must be seeing something in him to justify his selection, but from an outside perspective it’s difficult to see exactly what that might be. The Villans need to pick things up and soonish, and Hourihane is a massive hindrance in that.

Whelan is as mobile as a statue, Adomah can't run anymore, Hourihane is the invisible man. Mcginn doing more running than all 3 of them. So many problems remain in this squad #AVFC
