OPINION

Kristoffer Ajer had a real up and down game in Celtic’s 1-0 defeat to Valencia, and he was absolutely torn to shreds by some Hoops fans for his overall performance at the Mestalla. The Norway international missed two chances to get on the scoresheet, with his miss in the second half being simply inexcusable. It looked as though it was easier to score than miss, but Ajer headed a free-kick well wide of the goal from just a matter of yards. Away from his two misses, Ajer played quite well. He was forced to move to right-back after Jeremy Toljan’s red card but that did not stop the 20-year-old from putting in a solid defensive shift. Some Celtic fans have, understandably, fired criticism at Ajer for his two missed chances, but the Bhoys might not have even been in the game if he hadn’t played well at the back. Ajer’s first team chances are bound to increase next season if Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata leave, so strictly on a defensive basis, Celtic fans should be happy.
