BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has hit back at Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson after he criticised the broadcasters’ coverage of the Glasgow club.

As quoted by Rangers’ official website on Monday, Robertson accused the BBC of vilifying Alfredo Morelos and treating them differently to other clubs.

BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer English has responded to Roberton’s claims via his personal Twitter account, suggesting that the Ibrox chief is diverting the blame away from Rangers’ shortcomings on the pitch

“On Saturday Rangers dropped league points for the 11th time this season. Now trail Celtic by eight. Steven Gerrard very critical of his players again. Here’s Stewart Robertson criticising the BBC,” English said.

OPINION

Gerrard is hardly going to come out and blame the BBC for his side failing to beat St Johnstone on Saturday, especially when he is just solely focused on footballing matters at Ibrox. Robertson clearly has an issue with the BBC’s coverage of the Light Blues, and to suggest that the broadcaster might be influencing decisions against the club is totally absurd. Firstly, Rangers are one of, if not the, biggest club in Scotland – they are going to be covered more than the likes of Hamilton, Kilmarnock and St Mirren. Morelos gets headlines with his own antics, not because of anyone else. He is not only amazing for Rangers on the pitch but he is also amazing for media outlets when he blows his top – it makes for great news stories. If the BBC ignore something that is one of the biggest stories in Scottish football then they are not doing their jobs. Morelos deserves every ban he has received this season and is lucky to not be on his fifth or sixth red card by now. That’s not the BBC’s fault, it’s his.
