Steven Davis has been blown away by the “huge contribution” made by Allan McGregor since his Rangers return last summer.

The Northern Ireland international is eager to follow the example set by the goalkeeper, who also headed back to Ibrox for a second spell this season after quitting in the wake of the club’s 2012 administration.

Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times after signing on a six-month loan deal from Southampton, Davis said: “Greegsy for example has come in and made a huge contribution. I know from my time here before that the fans would and expect 100 per cent commitment.

“I can’t wait to show the fans again what I’m all about, I want to help the team and make an impact. No one needed to sell Rangers to me because I know what it’s all about.”

OPINION

How Davis would love to make as big an impact at Rangers in the second half of the season as McGregor has in the opening period of the campaign. The goalkeeper has been brilliant, as influential in the Light Blues’ box as Alfredo Morelos has been in the opposition’s. McGregor and Davis were teammates back when the Gers were hoovering up trophies for fun, and it would be a huge feather in the caps of the pair if they can help put a stop to Celtic’s dominance of the league, which has secured seven consecutive titles and successive trebles. Like McGregor, 36, Davis is at the veteran stage of his career and turned 34 on New Year’s Day. It is tougher for outfield players to thrive in their mid-30s, but the Southampton loanee still has enough miles on the clock to push Rangers over the line in alliance with McGregor, Morelos, Jermain Defoe and company. It is vital he has been signed in time to join the winter training camp in Tenerife, especially after being a fringe man at the Saints. Davis has the chance to get up to speed and lead the new year Ibrox surge.
