Celtic are holding a recruitment meeting today to try to finalise incoming transfers for the rest of the January window, according to Sky Sports journalist Jim White.

White added that two names were top of the agenda, Olympiakos right-back Omar Elabdellaoui and Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

White said that Celtic were looking to bring in McCarthy on loan.

Talking on The Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Weds, 10am), White said: “Celtic are set for a recruitment meeting today with two possible signings on the agenda, Omar Elabdellaoui and Everton’s James McCarthy.

“The meeting is to decide who is or isn’t coming to the club. Omar Elabdellaoui is one name but, get this, James McCarthy from Everton is a possible target, on loan from Everton.”

OPINION

Both of these players would be solid signings for Celtic but it would be James McCarthy that would really get the fans excited. The 28-year-old ROI international is a brilliant player and a self-confessed Celtic fan. He started off his career at Celtic before moving to Hamilton, and he’s since made 133 appearances for Wigan and 132 appearances for Everton. He hasn’t featured this season after suffering a serious injury last season, despite being back to full fitness. Celtic have been linked with a loan move for him and are considered to be favourites for his signature. It sounds like Celtic could be ready to accelerate this loan move today, with a recruitment meeting planned in Glasgow. Norway international Elabdellaoui is another solid prospect who brings experience of 34-caps with him. Celtic need to do more business to keep pace with Rangers (it’s a long time since we’ve been able to say that) and these two players would be a huge move in that direction.
