Western Melbourne have been hit with a blow in their bid to sign Celtic captain Scott Brown, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Australian newspaper claims that the A-League newcomers have been denied funding by Football Federation Australia to help cover some of the midfielder’s salary should he decide to quit Celtic Park.

It is understood that Western Melbourne have offered Brown a £16,000-a-week deal and the new expansion club sought funding from the FFA’s “marquee player fund” to help them seal the transfer.

Although Western Melbourne have been hit with this blow, the Herald reiterates that it is only a minor setback and a potential deal is “well and truly alive”.

Good move for Celtic?

Brown’s recent form has suggested that he is replaceable, but as a captain and a leader, Brendan Rodgers is going to have a hard time finding someone who can fill his boots.

The 33-year-old had has a brilliant career at Parkhead, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season and this interesting offer from Australia, it does seem like his time with the Bhoys is coming to an end.

It will be sad to see Brown leave the Hoops, but at the same time, Rodgers should be able to find someone who has been playing better than he has this season.

Maybe it is the perfect time for a replacement so that his inevitable exit isn’t dragged out.

Likely to happen?

Brown is more than likely going to sign a new deal with Celtic, but this offer from Down Under is certainly going to give him something to think about.

Celtic fans won’t hold it against him if he decides to move on this year, but at the same time, Brown is Bhoy and he may find it hard to play for any club that isn’t the one he has already made 493 appearances for.
