West Ham are in pursuit of Bologna forward Mattia Destro, according to Il Resto Del Carlino.

The Italian news outlet claims that the Italy international’s agent has flown into London to open talks over a potential switch to the Premier League, but that the Hammers could face competition from Newcastle for his services.

The 27-year-old has struggled for game time this season, featuring just 10 times in all competitions and starting just twice.

He has yet to register any goals.

Good move for West Ham?

If Manuel Pellegrini has identified Destro as the right man to bring in, then Hammers fans have to trust him. On the face of it, the Italian doesn’t look like the most obvious man to add firepower to the Irons’ front line, but this season has been a poor representation of his capabilities. When he is fit and firing Destro can be a lethal finisher, and he has the stats to prove it. Presumably he would be available at a decent price, and while he may not be the superstar they are looking for, he could be a very handy option to have at their disposal.

Likely to happen?

The fact that the player’s agent is in London is a very good sign, and would suggest that things are moving at a promising pace. Newcastle are also said to be interested in the forward, but the Hammers will fancy their chances of outstripping the Magpies in any kind of bidding war. The stages are early, but the omens are very positive for the Irons.
