West Ham have made contact with the agent of Sunderland forward Josh Maja as they look to sign the exciting young striker, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Hammers are eyeing up a swoop to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis, before sending him back on loan to the Stadium of Light, where he has scored 16 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions this season.

It is understood that Maja’s contract expires at the end of the season, but he has rejected fresh terms with Sunderland.

The Echo adds that a seven-figure bid worth £3million could be enough for West Ham to pry Maja away from the League One high-flyers.

Good move for West Ham?

Maja has been in top form for Sunderland this season and although he has been in red-hot form two tiers lower than West Ham, it is important to remember that he is a young player who still has bags of potential.

If the Hammers sign Maja for £3million this month, then they are bound to make a lot more off him in the future, whether he performs well or doesn’t, so it is certainly a risk that’s worth taking.

Loaning the striker back to Sunderland would ensure he is playing regularly and could stand him in good stead to get into West Ham’s first team next season.

All in all, this would be a very clever signing by Manuel Pellegrini.

Likely to happen?

The Sunderland Echo makes it clear that West Ham are not the only club interested in signing Maja.

Middlesbrough are said to be keeping tabs on him while clubs from Germany and Scotland have also been linked.

The Hammers will have to do very well to pull off a move for the London-born forward, but it does appear as though they are in pole position at this stage.
