West Ham are in the hunt to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy and are exploring the idea of singing the Republic of Ireland international on loan this month, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Fulham and West Brom are also interested in signing the 28-year-old, who is now back to fitness after suffering a double fracture in his right leg while playing against the Baggies last season.

Marco Silva is yet to name McCarthy in one of his matchday squads since the midfielder completed his recovery.

Good move for West Ham?

McCarthy is a decent player, but he has not played football regularly in a long time and there is a chance that it could take him a while to get back up to speed.

Manuel Pellegrini does need someone to add a bit of steel to his midfield and McCarthy should be able to do that, it’s just that the £50,000-a-week (Spotrac) midfielder is unlikely to get into the starting line-up for some time.

West Ham should have other defensive midfield targets they can look at but signing McCarthy on loan until the summer should be a pretty straightforward deal with him not playing at Everton.

Likely to happen?

It is too soon to say for sure because the January transfer window has only just started and the Mail also reported that West Ham are in talks to sign Bestikas’ Gary Medel.

As both McCarthy and Medel play in a similar position, the chances of them signing both are low and at this stage, it looks like a deal for the Chile international is more likely.

Everton should be willing to let McCarthy go out on loan, but at this stage, it’s hard to say if the London Stadium will be his next destination.
