West Brom boss Darren Moore is set to offer a contract to free agent Giles Barnes once the forward undergoes a fitness test, according to the Sun on Sunday.

The newspaper claimed via it’s print edition [page 63, January 20] that the available 30-year-old impressed Moore at a mid-season training camp in Dubai this week.

It is understood that the 19-times Jamaica international, who left Colorado Rapids in October, is willing to take a deal that lasts until the end of the season so he can prove his worth to the side.

Good move for West Brom?

Under no circumstances should Moore be offering Barnes a contract.

The former Baggies attacker has already had one chance at The Hawthorns and failed, and there’s no way he has gotten any better after several years in Mexico and the USA.

He has been without a club since October after leaving MLS side Colorado, there’s no way that he is good enough for the Championship, even if he is going to be adding strength in depth.

This would be a kick in the teeth for the young players at West Brom who are trying to break into the first team.

Likely to happen?

Moore has already offered one of his old Derby team-mates a place at West Brom when he signed Tyrone Mears on a free transfer in the summer.

Mears left Minnesota United to join the Baggies after hardly impressing in the MLS, so Moore has a track record for signings like this.

Don’t be surprised if this happens, but Barnes could be just training at West Brom to keep up his fitness levels.
