Celtic teenager Stephen Welsh has been pictured training along the first team and could potentially be in with a chance of being among the team who play host to Hamilton on Saturday, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper published photos of the Hoops’ training sessions ahead of their home clash this weekend and 19-year-old centre back Welsh, who has never been seen in the senior team either on the pitch or as a substitute, was pictured alongside the likes of Oliver Burke going through their paces.

It is reported that injury problems in the side have led to Welsh’s inclusion behind the scenes and that he could get his first taste of action this weekend with an appearance on the bench against Hamilton.

Opinion

This is how much the Bhoys have suffered with injuries this season – but the fact that Brendan Rodgers has chosen not to bring any new recruits in from a defensive aspect during the January transfer window might signal how much faith he has in the stars of tomorrow at Parkhead. Welsh might be lacking the senior experience but he is at an age now where he should be getting game time to help aid his development, be that at Celtic Park or another club out on loan. A place in the starting XI seems some way off but handing him a place on the bench, where he can get a feel for what it is like to be part of a match day squad, is a stepping stone to the next stage of his career. Do not be surprised if he is handed his debut between now and the end of the season.
