With Harry Kane and Son Heung-min both set to miss large parts of Tottenham’s season, the club must look to strengthen their attacking options this January, and Gelson Martins is the ideal candidate.

The Portuguese international will be allowed to leave Atletico Madrid this month, according to Marca, and Spurs must swoop to bring him to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has pace to burn and plenty of potential, and is every inch the archetypal Mauricio Pochettino player – able to play in a variety of positions and make an impact in every single one of them.

Most dangerous out on the wing, he can cause serious problems with direct approach, and can turn defence into attack in an instant with his driving runs.

Spurs need to start flexing some financial muscle if they are intent on escaping their reputation as perennial also-rans, and a move for Martins this January would give them a much needed midseason boost.

Atletico are seemingly keen to sell and Tottenham should be keen to buy.

It is said to be understood that Martins could be close to a move to Monaco, but a title challenge in the Premier League is surely preferable to a relegation battle in Ligue 1, and Spurs will miss a trick if they don’t go all out to land a player who could prove to be very, very good for them.
