Tottenham interested in Kalinic

Tottenham are interested in signing Atletico Madrid striker Nikola Kalinic and have tabled an offer for him, according to Marca.

The Croatian international, who was sent him from the World Cup for refusing to come on as a substitute, could be deemed surplus to requirements in Spain if Atletico can complete a deal for Alvaro Morata from Chelsea, according to the report.

Spurs are understood to be looking at the 31-year-old as a potential solution to their attacking injury crisis, and are said to be ‘concretely interested’.

Good move for Tottenham?

As a short term solution to their horrendous shortage of attackers, this could be a decent deal. It is more than likely that Spurs would look to secure the Croatian on a loan deal, and with the likelihood of Morata moving to Atletico increasing as Gonzalo Higuain’s supposed move to Chelsea nears, Kalinic would almost certainly be available. On the evidence of Sunday’s last gasp win over Fulham, Fernando Llorente is not the right man to lead the line in the absence of Harry Kane, and it must have shocked Mauricio Pochettino and the board into considering a move for a striker this window. He may not be a world beater, but Kalinic would be a better option than the Spaniard.

Likely to happen?

Before yesterday, this might have seemed like just another rumour, but Llorente was so poor that there is every chance that Spurs will dip their toe into the transfer market before the window shuts. Kalinic will be available, a loan would be affordable, and there’s little to stand in the way of it happening except Tottenham themselves. If Daniel Levy sticks to his guns and says the club aren’t signing anybody then it’s a no-go, but if he uses some common sense, this could be a quick and easy fix for the time being.
