Newly promoted Rangers under-18 coach Kevin Thomson has admitted that he is eyeing up the top job at Ibrox after a change up behind the scenes in Glasgow.

The Light Blues revealed via their official website that there had been a number of changes in the backroom staff across the youth teams, Steven Wright departing for Dundee which has seen Malky Thomson replace him while namesake Kevin becomes under-18 coach.

However, taking to his personal Twitter account after his move up the ranks, he admitted he was looking at Steven Gerrard’s job further down the line, saying: “Long long long way to go!! But I don’t see the point in doing anything if you don’t strive to be the best, I want to get to the top, so maybe one day in the distant future that can be a goal of mine.”

Opinion

It is great to see that the Gers have enough faith in those already at Ibrox to make the step up and become more trusted members of the coaching team, regardless of what level that might be at. It is also good to see the ambition held by the likes of Thomson, who would obviously love to be sitting where Gerrard is right now. The coach is relatively young in comparison to others in similar roles across the country and so has plenty of time to cut his teeth before making the step up in the hunt for a managerial job. Of course, working as an under-18 coach means that he will know a lot of the Gers’ future stars personally and being able to take that connection through the youth team into the senior side could be brilliant for the club. Just look at how Gareth Southgate has worked wonders with England after his promotion from a youth manager. Thomson could follow in his footsteps at Ibrox and make a real difference in the future.
