Alan Shearer has called out Rio Ferdinand on Twitter for his comments about Newcastle United.

The former Manchester United defender defended Mike Ashley’s ownership of the Magpies on BT Sport during their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday evening, and then took to social media on Sunday morning to reiterate his comments.

In a post made on his personal Twitter account, Ferdinand said: “NUFC fans good morning to you all!! Ya clubs turning a profit, no debt, oh & playing in the PL! Terrible!”

Toon legend Shearer then responded to his fellow pundit by suggesting that his argument was flawed.

The Match of the Day pundit tweeted: “The last club accounts tell you they are over £140 million in debt!!”

OPINION

Shearer is the so often the voice of Newcastle fans everywhere, and it’s no surprise that he has spoken up in disdain for Ferdinand’s comments. The ex-England defender has made a bit of a fool of himself on this one. Not only has he got a lot of facts wrong, but his business affiliations with Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct give the whole thing a suspicious feel, as if the pundit is saying what he’s meant to rather than what he believes. Ashley has ran Newcastle into the ground, and now that the club needs his help more than ever, he is sat in his ivory tower washing his hands of the situation. The business man has hung his club out to dry, and if that isn’t bad enough, he then has respectable ex-professionals spouting propagandist nonsense in the media to make him look better. Thankfully, there are many who still believe that Ashley is rotten, and Shearer and co will not let lies be spread about they beloved club.
