Rangers have made a surprise move for Barrow goalkeeper Andy Firth, according to the Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon.

The 22-year-old move from Liverpool to Barrow in the summer and played under Gerrard at Liverpool.

Firth came up through the youth ranks at Liverpool and spent a half-season on-loan at Chester where he made 11 appearances.

Nixon made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Thursday afternoon.

OPINION

This is a surprise move, with Rangers seemingly covered for goalkeepers. Allan McGregor is the undisputed number one at Ibrox and has been playing brilliantly. Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick are the more-than-capable stand-ins, with Foderingham playing pretty much every game for the first-team last year. He didn’t do a bad job either but McGregor is the better keeper. Gerrard will know all about Firth after the player played under him while he was at Anfield, and he must like him a lot. He’s played 18 games in the National League this season, keeping five clean sheets, and it sounds like he could be in line for a very big move to Rangers. If he does come in we can only imagine that one of either Foderingham or Alnwick will be moved out, which could save a lot on wages. Foderingham would be the obvious one and he’s good enough to get a move to the English Championship or a similar level.
