Davie Provan has claimed that Rangers would be willing to go into liquidation again if it meant preventing Celtic from winning another Scottish Premiership title this season.

The Gers have completed some eye-catching business so far this January, and Celtic legend Provan has claimed that the Ibrox side would go all out to prevent their city rivals from retaining their league crown.

Writing for the Scottish Sun, he said: “For a club that went bust recently, Gers’ spending this season looks criminal.

“If Dave King is picking up even half of Defoe’s £130,000-a-week Bournemouth wages, he should be sectioned but common sense put its jacket on from the moment ten-in-a-row reared its ugly head again.

“You get the impression Gers would take another liquidation if it meant stopping the Hoops reaching the big ten.”

OPINION

Provan’s comments seem excessive. Yes, Rangers would give anything to usurp Celtic from their throne, but to suggest that the club would go bust again in doing so is a little too much. The Gers have endured some real hardships in recent times, and to flippantly argue that they would be willing to do it all again out of pettiness is shortsighted and unprofessional. They’ve sent big this winter, but the club must feel that it is within their means, and it feels as if Provan’s comments are those of a Celtic loyalist with his feathers ruffled. The title might be a stretch this season, but next year, if they build on the successes of Steven Gerrard’s first year at the helm, they could go all the way, and that will be a worry to anybody associated with the Hoops. Rangers should take Provan’s comments as a compliment more than anything else.
