Rangers have been given a boost in their reported hunt for 21-year-old striker Karlan Grant, after Charlton manager Lee Bower said he was “weighing up his options”.

The Scottish Sun had reported that Rangers wanted to sign Grant on a pre-contract agreement this month.

Talking in the Daily Record (live transfer blog, 11.21am), Bowyer said he hadn’t heard about Rangers interest but that there was nothing ‘official’ to report. However, he did say the player was weighing up a move, with his contract expiring in the summer.

“I’ve only heard the story that Rangers are interested. I’m not aware of anything official.

“There have been a couple of other clubs interested in a couple of our players, but again we’ve not really had anything concrete yet.

“It’s difficult for Karlan because he has done well and has improved so much in a short space of time – because he has only got until the summer left [on his contract] he is weighing up his options.

“We can’t just chuck stupid money around to players. We have to think of the football club as well.”

Steven Gerrard is said to be a fan of the 21-year-old.

OPINION

It was reported that Rangers wanted Grant as a replacement for Alfredo Morelos, who they think could leave in the summer. 21-year-old Grant has been in top form this season, with 13 goals from 26 games. The former England Under-18 international has a lot of promise and if Rangers could snap him up on a free, with a pre-contract deal in January, it would mark another notch in the CV for Mark Allen. The director of football has proved again how astute he is this season, with a mix of experienced and young new recruits. Rangers fans won’t want to lose Morelos, but with Jermain Defoe on the books for at least 18 months, they would be well covered if they managed to get hold of Grant. Rangers fans will get their first look at Defoe tonight in the cup, with Gerrard confirming that both he and Steven Davis would be involved at some point in the game against Cowdenbeath. Ibrox will be electric when he first runs onto the pitch.
