Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the club are in crunch talks with the agent of Matt Polster over a long-term deal at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old utility man, able to play in defence or midfield, is a free agent after leaving Chicago Fire at the end of the MLS season and is said to have joined the Gers on their warm weather training camp in Tenerife.

Now Gerrard has revealed that he is keen on offering the one-cap USA international a deal which would see him sign with the club for the foreseeable future.

He told the Scotsman: “We are in talks with Matt Polster’s agent. We haven’t got it over the line just yet but we’ve told his advisers that we’d like him to come. It would be a long-term deal.

“I know him well from the MLS. He’s a player who can play in numerous positions, a good professional in good shape and he has the potential to be a first-team player at Rangers.”

Opinion

One of the most important aspects of a title push, regardless of the division, is quality in depth and Polster’s signing at Rangers would give Gerrard exactly that. His ability to play in a number of roles covers much of the side and means that any injuries or suspensions suffered by the Gers over the coming months will not be as disastrous. Gerrard says that Polster is being signed as a first team player but really the truth is he is going to be on the fringes of the senior side, filling in when needed. He is not going to take James Tavernier’s place at right back and with so much talent already at the club in midfield before January had even come around, his chances are limited. Perhaps that is why a deal is yet to be concluded, but it seems only a matter of time until it is.
