Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Parkhead star Kieran Tierney is closing in on a return from his hip injury and is hoping for a massive boost to the first team in early February.

The Scottish left back has been missing from action since early December with his setback and there had been no clear date set as to a possible return for the defender.

However, speaking to Sky Sports – as revealed on the broadcaster’s Scottish Twitter account – Rodgers confirmed that Tierney is being eyed for a return to action in what could be just over a week’s time in what will be a welcome return for the homegrown talent.

Opinion

This is music to the Parkhead faithful’s ears. Emilio Izaguirre has not been tearing it up on the left flank in the Scot’s absence and they have been waiting patiently for any sort of update, good or bad, on when they might see Tierney back in action. To hear that he could be back playing as soon as a fortnight away is massive for the club, who know that they are a much stronger side with him in the starting XI than without him. With Europa League action on the horizon as well as league and cup fixtures domestically, having him in the team will only improve their hopes of securing yet more silverware come the end of the season. His hip injury is obviously something that the club will have to manage – so many players have been plagued by problems of a similar nature during their careers – and so he might not be expected to play as many games as he has in the past this season but he will still be the number one choice on his return to fitness.
