Jim White cracked a joke about Rangers signing the newly-retired Glen Johnson when stating that Steven Gerrard was in need of signing a new goalkeeper.

The talkSPORT presenter was discussing the 34-year-old’s career as he decided to announce his retirement while on air, as transcribed by the broadcaster’s website, and made a cheeky remark to suggest he still had options if he wanted to keep playing.

Johnson was asked whether he was the type of defender who used to fancy himself in goal and upon revealing that he didn’t mind messing about between the sticks, White jokingly informed him Gerrard needed a keeper.

“It just so happens Steven Gerrard is looking for a new goalkeeper?” White stated on talkSPORT (Monday January 21st, 12:42) before bursting out laughing.

OPINION

It’s quite a surprise that Johnson, who won 54 caps for England during his career, has decided to retire as at the age of 34 as you  feel he could still do a job for someone. This is clearly what White thought as he did make a through reference to Rangers while interviewing Johnson before making the joke about him potentially being a possible goalkeeper for Gerrard to look at. In fairness ahead of retiring, Johnson who has been without a club since Stoke City let him go in the summer, probably would have looked a good for the Gers on paper. Gerrard has already brought one well-recognised England international to Ibrox in the form of Jermain Defoe and if he had recruited Johnson, no one would have been overly surprised. The 34-year-old could have done a job at Rangers given that he is very experienced and can play in every position across the back-four, but as it turns out, it just was never on the cards and Johnson has decided to hang up his boots rather than continue playing anyway.
