Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is set to extend his loan spell at Scunthorpe United until the end of the season, it has been confirmed.

Alnwick was originally on loan at the League One club until January, but the Iron have looked to extend that until the end of the season after an impressive run of performances between the sticks.

Asked on BBC Radio Humberside (6:55) if Alnwick will remain at Scunthorpe, manager Stuart McCall said: “Yes, I think so, we’re getting there. It is looking positive that we’ll keep him. I believe it’s almost done.

“The first thing is to get Jak done and dusted, then we’ll see how we go.”

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Rangers already have Allan McGregor as their established number one and the outstanding goalkeeper in the SPL, as well as former first choice Wes Foderingham as his deputy. There has been talking of a new number three being signed, which would make Alnwick surplus to requirements. The 25-year-old has made only 11 appearances for the Light Blues since being signed by ex-boss Mark Warburton from Port Vale in January 2017 and the consistent excellence of McGregor since the start of the season means the 6ft 2in colossus (source: Transfermarkt) Alnwick’s opportunities are likely to be thin on the ground, not only this season but subsequent to that, too. Gerrard doesn’t want an unhappy player moping around, and Rangers are better off getting him off the wage bill and making sure he is at a club where he is playing regularly.

Likely to happen?

Given McCall’s confidence in a deal, it appears is only a matter of time before it is announced that Alnwick will remain on loan at Scunthorpe for the rest of the campaign.
