It looks like Newcastle are finally springing into life in the January transfer window. It had all gone very quiet after heavy speculation over MLS attacker Miguel Almiron had dissipated. Now it looks like they’re finally ready to make their moves with offers for both Gelson Martins and Antonio Barreca submitted. Both players would be loan deals, reflective of the financial situation at Newcastle, but both are solid players who would be big upgrades on what Benitez has at his disposal currently. 23-year-old Barreca has made 13 appearances for Italy’s Under-23s although he’s yet to break through into the senior side. He’s made seven appearances in Ligue 1 for Monaco this season and has also played 90 minutes in the Champions League against Bruge. Any transfer activity is good news for Newcastle, who are facing another fight against relegation, with Benitez making the most of a squad that he hasn’t been given the finds to improve. They’re currently one place and just two points above the relegation zone.
