Steven Davis was treated to a round of applause from the Rangers squad and manager Steven Gerrard when he arrived for his first training session with the club, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Monday that Davis, 34, met up with his new team-mates after wrapping up his return to Ibrox, six and a half years after leaving for Southampton.

It is understood that the Gers squad gave the midfielder a nice welcome at the club’s mid-season training camp in Tenerife.

Southampton’s Davis joined the Light Blues on loan for the rest of the season on Sunday.

OPINION

A lot has happened in Davis’ time away from Rangers, but he will have no doubt felt right back at home when he pulled on the club’s training gear and jogged out on to the training pitch on Monday – even if it was in Tenerife. Davis was captain during his final season at Ibrox in 2011/12 and his leadership is going to be invaluable to the side in the second-half of the season. Rangers are level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and they will be on a real high right now after winning the Old Firm derby in December. Signing Davis is going to be an even bigger boost for the club, who have a serious chance of winning the league title now. There is quality everywhere you look in this side that Gerrard has assembled. Allan McGregor has been a class act in goals. Davis, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield are bound to dominate midfield battles. James Tavernier and Ryan Kent can cause all sorts of problems down the wings and then up front you have Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe. What a time to be a Rangers fan. And what a time for Scottish football.
