One of the big issues that Steven Gerrard chose to tackle over the summer transfer window was the lack of quality central defenders at his disposal – and it is a problem which is threatening to rear its head once again this month.

The Light Blues have Conor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall at their disposal and so while it looks alright now, losing any one of them would leave Gerrard on thin ice.

The Daily Record hint that the Ibrox boss could well be facing that headache with Nottingham Forest said to be keeping close tabs on Worrall, the report worryingly suggesting that he could be recalled from his loan by the Championship side as they look to appoint a new manager.

Three central defenders is not enough for the Gers and finding someone quality could be a tough task this month – although they need only look just south of the border to find what they are looking for.

Step forward Ciaran Clark, the Newcastle United centre back whose chances of first team action at St James’ Park have just fallen through the floor.

That is because Saturday saw Florian Lejeune return from a long term injury layoff and it now gives Rafael Benitez no less than five senior central defenders – six if you count left back Paul Dummett as part of a back three – with Clark very much sitting bottom of that pile.

With the opportunity of regular game time, Clark would likely be open to a move to Glasgow and if the Gers are willing to pay a portion of his wages, Newcastle are unlikely to stand in the way of his temporary exit.

It would be a cheeky move from the Gers, with Clark very much a Premier League quality defender, but the chance to work with Gerrard and be involved in the Scottish title race could well tempt the powerhouse to move.

The former Aston Villa man is a huge step up from Worrall, with bags of experience both for club and country, and with some serious ambition being shown by Rangers this season with the capture of Jermaine Defoe and Steven Davis, they are an exciting project any player would love to be a part of.

If Worrall is on the move, Gerrard can bury any worries about his exit with an ambitious bid for Clark.
