Wolves are considering a swoop for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, according to respected journalist Tim Nash.

It is understood that the Midlands club are looking to recruit another forward before the transfer window shuts on Thursday, and it is believed that Nuno Espirito Santo is an admirer of the 32-year-old World Cup winner.

Writing on his personal Twitter, Nash, the former Wolves correspondent for the Express and Star, said: “@Wolves boss @Nuno would still like to sign a striker on loan.

“They retain an interest in Liverpool forward Divock Origi, 23, while there is also admiration for Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud, 32.”

The 6’3″ hitman [Transfermarkt] has had his future at Chelsea cast into doubt by the arrival of Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus.

Good move for Wolves?

Yes. Giroud often doesn’t get the credit he deserves, but there is a reason why he is Didier Deschamps first choice striker in a ridiculously talented French side, and he has the quality and pedigree to be a real hit for Wanderers. He may not be the most mobile of forwards, but he is a first rate target man capable of the sublime, and if he is given a run of matches and a high standard of service, he will score. The latter wouldn’t be an issue for a Wolves side in possession of some of the best creative players outside of the top six, and a proven, world class striker waiting to put away the chances they make would surely turn Wolves into European football contenders.

Likely to happen?

This one feels a little bit like a hit and hope in truth. Giroud would be an incredible signing, and the hope of loan deal does make it more likely, as does the arrival of Higuain, but Maurizio Sarri will still want cover for his new star man, and the prospect of any top four team letting a first tam player leave with a direct replacement in January always seems a little bit hard to believe. Stranger things have happened, and it would be wonderful if it did come off, but don’t hold your breath.
