Wolverhampton Wanderers have secured the option to purchase defender Alexander Molberg at the end of his loan stint at Molineux after extending his temporary stay at the club, according to journalist Tim Spiers.

The Express and Star reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the 19-year-old will remain at the Premier League side until the end of the season from Hobro IK, having been part of the under-23 setup for the first half of the campaign, and that there is now the option to turn the deal permanent.

The Danish youngster has started the majority of the Premier League 2 games for Wolves and is able to play at centre back or on the left hand side of the defence.

Opinion

He might not be in the first team at Wolves but it appears as though the Premier League side have high hopes for the youngster and want to see what more he can offer between now and the end of the season. If he keeps performing well for the under-23s then he may well find himself handed a first team opportunity, which could well prove to be his final audition in his hunt for a permanent move to Molineux. Agreeing a loan-to-buy deal for Molberg means that Wolves can feel confident they will not be losing out on his capture to a rival side, should they want to snap him up, and judging from the way the teenager is performing regularly for the reserves that seems like an option the club are hoping to trigger. It is an interesting way for a big club to go about securing new signings – loaning them from their parent club and testing them out – but it looks as though it could have worked a treat for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men this time around.
