Wolverhampton Wanderers are keen to hand defender Matt Doherty a new deal, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon, football correspondent at The Sun, reported on his personal Twitter account on Sunday that talks are imminent between the two parties regarding a new contract.

The 26-year-old has been a mainstay for Nuno Espirito Santo this season, making 23 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals in that time.

OPINION

Tying Doherty down to a new deal is a no-brainer for Wolves, with the Republic of Ireland international having been one of their standout performers so far in the Premier League.  His role as right wing-back is so important to the way that Wolves play under Nuno, and Doherty has proved this season that he can shoulder major responsibility for the Molineux club. Doherty still has two-and-a-half years left on his current deal with Wolves, but securing his future with a bumper pay rise would be a wise move. His form over the past several months will no doubt have attracted interest from some big clubs, with the likes of Tottenham already linked with a move. Wolves need to keep hold of as many players as possible if they are to achieve their aim of becoming a force in the top-flight, with Doherty’s future being one of the most important things for them right now.
