Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Southampton striker Charlie Austin on a permanent deal, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper report that Austin is set to leave the Saints after being told he can go for the right price by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, with the 29-year-old starting just twice so far under the Austrian.

The Telegraph claim that both Wolves and Aston Villa are in the hunt for Austin, with both Midlands sides keen to add to their attacking options before the end of the window.

Austin currently earns £70,000-a-week at St. Mary’s [Spotrac].

Good move for Wolves?

Absolutely.

Austin may not be the quickest or most skilful striker around, but the 29-year-old certainly knows where the goal is.

Before he joined Southampton, the forward was averaging around a goal every two games at previous clubs Burnley and QPR, and while he may never rediscover that form, his goalscoring pedigree cannot be denied.

With Raul Jimenez shouldering a lot of the burden in attack this season, bringing in Austin before the deadline could be an unexpected masterstroke from Nuno.

Likely to happen?

One thing that looks certain is that Austin will leave Southampton in the coming days.

Whether his destination will be Molineux is almost impossible to say at this point however, with Villa among a couple of other clubs said to be interested.
