West Ham chiefs have given the green light over a £10million bid for Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey as Manuel Pellegrini looks to strengthen the options he has in his midfield, according to the Daily Express.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Hammers have already seen an offer for the Newcastle maestro turned down but they are not willing to give up on trying to secure his signing and are ready to offer an eight figure fee to seal his capture this month.

The 26-year-old has been in and out of the Magpies’ side this season due to injury, with just 12 appearances across all competitions.

Good move for West Ham?

The Irons could do with a little bit more creativity from the middle of the park and Shelvey has proven his ability over the years with his exceptional passing and vision.

Is he really suited to the sort of style West Ham play? That remains to be seen, but if Pellegrini can get him pinging balls over the top of the defence to the likes of Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic then he would be a dangerous asset.

At £10million he could be something of a bargain, with plenty of years left on the clock and a proven ability in the Premier League.

Likely to happen?

Not at £10million. Newcastle are in desperate need of cash and Shelvey is one of their top performers so they are going to demand a premium for his sale, especially when it is a Premier League rival looking at taking him away.

Rafael Benitez is going to stand firm over this one so if West Ham are desperate for him they need to up that price tag by almost double – or offer a player in return.
