West Ham have opened talks to sign Bristol Rovers defender Michael Kelly as they look to beat two London clubs to his signature this month, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the east London club are working on a deal to land Kelly, 21 ahead of Crystal Palace and Millwall.

Football Insider report Kelly is in the final six months of his contract at West Ham and his form and availability has attracted a stampede of clubs to Rovers in recent months.

Good move for West Ham?

West Ham are certainly in need of a left-back who can take over permanently from hit-and-miss duo Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku. Cresswell has impressed of late but his standards have slipped in recent seasons, while Masuaku is a liability in and around his own box. The Hammers need a more solid and long-term option in the position, and it is understandable why they have set their sights on Kelly. He has made a big impact for Rovers in his 20 appearances this season, and has bounced back after it appeared his career was offer following failed spells at Aberdeen and Leicester City. But it is a major step from League One to the Premier League, and there must be major doubt as to whether Kelly can narrow the gap.

Likely to happen?

Given Kelly’s contract situation, it is highly likely he will quit Rovers either this month or in the summer, and head to a club higher up the football pyramid. Given the clubs challenging for his signature, much will depend upon who can offer the 21-year-old the path to regular match time and the best chance of developing his career.
