Tottenham keen on Carroll

Tottenham have set their sights on signing West Ham striker Andy Carroll to solve their problem up front, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the north Londoners could land the 6ft 4in forward from their rivals for a fee of £2million this month as he is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Sun report Carroll is a “shock contender” to move to Tottenham and that the deal will hinge on whether Manuel Pellegrini believes he needs him to cover for unsettled Marko Arnautovic.

Good move for Tottenham?

No. A move for Carroll would smack of desperation. Sure, the giant forward comes to life when the ball is pumped into the box, and there is no player in the world you’d rather have to latch on to crosses in the last five minutes when chasing a game. But Carroll’s injury record is lamentable and his lack of mobility is lamentable. Spurs already have a tower striker in Fernando Llorente and he rarely gets a game, although he did start at Fulham in yesterday’s 2-1 win and play the full 90 minutes. You can see why Carroll might be attractive because of his back-to-goal ability and heading excellence, but Spurs should steer well clear. They’re better off promoting 16-year-old Troy Parrott.

Likely to happen?

The Sun are a fairly reliable source of such transfer stories, and the writers are reasonably well connected. But, it is hard to see this deal happening. Even at a £2million fee and on the apparent 18-month contract Carroll could be offered, it is a deal that makes no financial sense for Spurs.
