Sky Sports pundit Liam Rosenior has claimed he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Tottenham sign £50million-valued Callum Wilson this month.

Speaking on the broadcaster’s Debate programme on Tuesday night, Rosenior claimed Wilson is the “perfect fit” for the Londoners and they are “in a position where they have to do something” after Harry Kane’s devastating blow.

Spurs revealed on Tuesday evening that Kane will be sidelined for two months after damaging ankle ligaments in Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United.

“I think the Tottenham fans will be desperate for the club to get someone in,” Rosenior said. “Mauricio Pochettino has done such a good job. I am desperate for them to take the next step. Now is the time to make that mark.

“I look at Callum Wilson and think he’s the perfect fit. He is of a profile where he would be delighted to have the chance to play for a club like Tottenham. He gives them the pace to run in behind and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do put a marker down and show they want to keep Pochettino and build for the future.

“I praised Tottenham in the summer because they realised they had an outstanding head coach who has performed nothing short of a miracle to get them in a position where can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool, but now they are in a position where they have to do something.”

OPINION

Rosenior has more faith in the Spurs hierarchy’s ambition and intent than most Lilywhites, it seems. Given that Sky report it would cost £50million to prise Wilson from Bournemouth before 31 January, there appears more chance of Kane lining up to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday than there does of the 26-year-old making a sensational move to the new White Hart Lane. Strange things do happen late on in transfer windows, especially when clubs panic. But Spurs have an abundance of attacking quality and, while it would be foolish to understate the importance of goal king Kane, they have coped well without him when he has suffered ankle injuries in each of the previous three seasons. Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min – when he returns from international duty in early February – are potent attacking weapons and they should be given the responsibility of leading the attack. Wilson is a fine player but he is probably worth around half of the touted £50million valuation. There’s no chance of Spurs paying that.
