Tottenham have identified Sampdoria centre-back as their top target to replace Toby Alderweireld, according to the Independent.

The 22-year-old has become a key figure for the Serie A side this season, and would likely cost around £35million.

Alderweireld recently signed a contract extension with Spurs that includes a £25million release clause, as reported by the Evening Standard, and is attracting interest from several clubs, including PSG.

Tottenham have therefore taken the decision to draw up a list of potential replacements, with the 6’2″ Danish youth international understood to be their priority target.

Manchester United are also thought to be keen on the player.

Good move for Spurs?

Andersen has all the attributes needed to become a top class centre-back. Physically strong, athletic, and a natural reader of the game, his natural talents makes him an exciting prospect. The 22-year-old has enjoyed a breakout year in Serie A this season, and has turned quite a few heads across Europe with his performances. He still has a lot to learn, but already looks to be on his towards being one of the best defenders on the continent. At £35 million, he won’t be cheap, but that price tag could look like a steal in years to come if he lives up to the hype he is creating for himself.

Likely to happen?

If Spurs lose Alderweireld, which at this stage seems like a worrying inevitability, then they would likely look to reinvest that money straight away in a replacement. Andersen would be affordable, and would surely be tempted by the prospect of playing for a side like Spurs with their emphasis on youth. That being said, there’s a lot of interest being reported from sides that could match and outstrip the Londoners financially, and if it comes down to a bidding war, Tottenham could well be priced out of it.
