Graham Roberts has insisted that Juan Foyth “can go to the very top” after his performance for Tottenham against Tranmere on Friday night.

Spurs hammered the lower-league outfit 7-0 in the FA Cup tie at Prenton Park in what was the Argentine’s eighth appearance of the season.

Tottenham legend and former centre-back Roberts explained in a Twitter exchange with a supporter that he agrees Foyth is “fantastic on the ball” and has immense potential.

OPINION

By his own admission, Foyth has had some nervous and dicey moments since being handed his Premier League against Wolves in November, when he conceded two penalties in a 3-2 win. But the Argentina international has subsequently demonstrated that he is a huge talent and has probably had more match action that he would have expected, given that Spurs have centre-backs of the calibre of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in their ranks. Foyth has been seen only fleetingly over the last month despite injuries to Vertonghen and Eric Dier, as Mauricio Pochettino gradually acclimatizes him to elite football. The clash against Tranmere was ideal for Foyth, as it provided him with his eighth 90-minute run-out of the season against less demanding opposition. What stands out in the south American’s play is his composure on the ball and willingness to take it in difficult areas. He is a real talent and one to get excited about.
