European champions Real Madrid are confident of signing Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen, according to AS.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Santiago Solari’s expect their ‘special relationship’ with Spurs to pay dividends yet again, with the European giants feeling like they have the upper hand over Daniel Levy due to Eriksen’s contract situation.

Madrid have twice signed Tottenham favourites in the past, snaring both Gareth Bale and Luka Modric from the North London club.

There is much uncertainty regarding Eriksen’s future with Spurs, with the Denmark star’s deal expiring at the end of next season.

OPINION

This isn’t very good news for Tottenham, there’s no other way to slice it. Eriksen is probably second only to Harry Kane in terms of Spurs’ most important players and so it would be disastrous for them to lose him. However, they’ve got themselves in this situation by not sorting the player’s future out earlier. That’s one of the reasons why Madrid are so confident – because of Eriksen’s contract. In the Bale and Modric negotiations Spurs had the upper hand because they were both tied down on long term deals, but they don’t have that luxury with Eriksen. Obviously when Madrid come in for players there’s often nothing you can do, and so the signs are ominous for Tottenham. Hopefully the club will be able to convince Eriksen to sign a new contract but this is a story that is moving in a very worrying direction for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
