Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that it his ambition to win titles with Tottenham, but admits that the club will need to change their transfer policy if they are to do so.

Spurs failed to bring in any new additions one the summer, and Pochettino has previously suggested that it could be difficult for them to do so in January, as reported by Goal.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night, as quoted in the Evening Standard, he said: “I need to be honest. I want to win the Premier League.

“But if we want to win titles we need to operate in a different way. At the moment we operate in the same way as we operated five years ago when we arrived.

“Of course, maybe we can win some titles but it’s going to be a tough job because in that situation every club in the last five years was improving a lot.”

OPINION

Pochettino has essentially articulated what everybody else has been thinking for a long time now. Spurs cannot expect to compete for titles while they continue to adhere so strictly to a policy of financial conservatism in the transfer market. There’s nothing wrong with not blowing cash for the sake of it, and it is necessary to consider the cost of their new stadium and how that may have affected their spending, but if they are serious about progressing as a club and becoming serious title challengers then they need to splash out more. Equally as important will be keeping a hold of the players they have, of course, and that too could be problematic when clubs willing to flex a bit more financial muscle come calling. Everything is in place for Tottenham to make the next step towards success, but they will have to make a big choice about what they want first, and they’ll have to make it soon.
