Christian Eriksen is heading towards signing a mammoth Tottenham contract after delivering a positive update on his future to the media, according to a reliable journalist.

Football London’s Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold explained in a Q&A for the site (Wednesday, 4.12pm) in answer to a question about the Dane that he “can’t see why he won’t sign a bumper new deal” to replace the agreement that expires in 18 months.

Gold insisted “one in a million” Eriksen is “happy” in north London and there is a positive vibe around the player’s situation after his update to the Danish media on Tuesday night.

On his contract talks with Spurs, the playmaker said: “I think people know what I want, and I know what [Tottenham] would like, and there is a good dialogue so there is nothing there [about the move rumours].”

OPINION

When it comes to Spurs, Gold knows his onions and his update is hugely encouraging for Lilywhites desperate for one of the Premier League’s outstanding players to commit his long-term future to the club. Eriksen’s situation has become a very topical one given that talks over a new deal have yet to reach an agreement as quickly as they did with other star men Harry Kane and Dele Alli last year. This has prompted speculation that the great Dane is playing a waiting game and eager to test the water to see who might be interested in paying big money to sign him over the summer. Reports this week have suggested Real Madrid have been in touch with Daniel Levy over the fee needed to sign Eriksen, while Barcelona have cooled their interest. As Levy will know as well as anyone, the price for Eriksen will become more palatable for suitors the more his contract runs down. This is a delicate situation even for the famed negotiator. As Gold points out, players of Eriksen’s calibre are worth their weight in gold.
