Southampton are keen on Brentford duo Ollie Watkins and Chris Mepham, according to the Daily Mirror.

The national newspaper’s live transfer blog claims that the Championship outfit value the pair at £20million a piece and don’t reveal how much the Saints would be willing to spend.

The Daily Mirror report that Southampton are keeping tabs on the Brentford duo currently ahead of potentially making bids for them in January.

Good move for Southampton?

Yes, 100%.

Even with the players having huge price tags on their heads, Southampton would be very smart to sign both of them as soon as possible if they can.

Watkins, who is a left-sided winger, has looked the real deal in his 24 outings this season and has even racked up an impressive seven goals as well four assists to show for his efforts.

It’s easy to see the 23-year-old making the step up the Premier League with ease as a result.

As for Mepham, the 21-year-old centre-back could easily help make the Saints look more solid at the back and be a player the club can rely on for many seasons.

The Brentford defender has been a reliable and solid presence at the back for the London club this season in his 24 appearances, and he is definitely a player with a bright future.

Likely to happen?

Watkins and Mepham due to their consistency in the Championship and their young ages likely have a host of suitors, so the Saints will have to throw everything they’ve got to get the pair.

Also with Brentford wanting £20million each for their duo it might put the Saints off as that is a lot of money to invest in unproven Premier League talent even if they look promising in the Championship.

With January bids being reported as possible by the Mirror, it will soon be clear how keen the Saints are on the duo, but with an offer being tabled, it’s easy to have doubts about them getting the pair.
