Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has been the outstanding player in the Premier League this season, according to Tony Cascarino.

The talkSPORT pundit has claimed he would “give” the coveted player of the year award to the 24-year-old for his excellence on the left side of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“Left backs will rarely get anywhere near contention for the two big player of the year awards but, when I looked back over my teams of the week for The Times this season I noticed Robertson had appeared more than any other player,” Cascarino told the Times.

“Virgil van Dijk, his fellow Liverpool defender, has received plenty of praise but, if Liverpool win the league and Robertson maintains his form until the end of the season, then he must be in with a chance of receiving one of the two main individual honours. I would give it to him.”

OPINION

Steady on, Cas. Robertson has been one of Liverpool’s outstanding players this season and would walk into most people’s Premier League team of the year at left-back. But player of the year? Not quite. Has Robertson been more influential in Liverpool’s title charge – which suffered a blip with last night’s 1-1 home draw against Leicester City – than Van Dijk, Alisson or Mohamed Salah? Probably not. Sure, his energy, mobility, defensive solidity and threat on the overlap, which has helped to yield seven assists from 28 matches in all competitions, has set the bar for all his teammates, and rivals, too. Robertson is durable, as well, barely missing a game. But Alisson and Van Dijk are the two who have taken Liverpool to the next level, while Salah is the team’s matchwinner. Had he played anywhere near his normal level against Leicester, then Liverpool would surely have won comfortably. When Mo has lost his mojo, the team is always a bit bereft.
