Jamie Redknapp heaped praise on Chelsea midfielder Jorginho ahead of the Blues facing Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

The retired midfielder shared that he loved watching the 27-year-old Brazilian play as he had a great footballing brain when previewing Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal for the Daily Mail’s print edition (Saturday January 19th, page 127).

Jorginho has been criticised this season by some Chelsea fans on social media this season, particularly his displays against Crystal Palace and Manchester City, as well as pundits such as Danny Murphy and even former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

“Let’s not forget that this is Jorginho’s first season in England. He has dealt with physicality and lack of winter break well,” wrote Redknapp.

“I love watching him play. He has a great footballing brain.”

OPINION

Jorginho has basically been Marmite at Stamford Bridge this season as while some adore his role in the team, others believe he should be making the headlines more and perhaps contributing more in front of goal. However the 27-year-old midfield enforcer was not signed for that reason and it’s unfair that his lack of assists and goals is being held against him by some. Jorginho may have only registered one assist in the 25 outings he has made for the club but he has played an important role in running the midfield for his side, and that is what he was brought to the club to do. The midfielder is a fabulous talent, with his passing being a joy to watch, so it’s no surprise that Redknapp in a way launches a defence of the player ahead of Chelsea playing Arsenal. Hopefully more people get on board with Jorginho and he continues to do his part for Blues as it’s sometimes hard to work out why he has been regularly singled out this season.
