Jamie O’Hara has ripped into a section of Tottenham fans on Twitter for “ridiculous” calls for Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked.

Spurs supporters are massively disappointed by the two cup eliminations over the last five days and some have turned on the manager after he claimed Champions League qualification is more important than winning trophies.

Former Tottenham midfielder O’Hara is stunned by criticism of “the man who is working miracles with no signings and a young and depleted squad”, insisting the club must “keep Poch at all costs”.

OPINION

O’Hara is spot on. Those Spurs fans calling for Pochettino to go must need their heads examined. Sure, the two cup exits are immensely disappointing, and the manager’s post-match claim about trophies not being important is ludicrous and contemptuous of supporters desperate for some silverware after 11 years without any. The Argentine picked a weakened site for an away cup tie against a Premier League side, and it backfired massively. He is accountable for what was a misguided decision. He has compounded it with his comments, and had he not made them, then fans would certainly have given him more slack. There will be bridges for Pochettino to build in the coming days. He gets little wrong, and his diplomacy makes him an immensely respected and popular figure – at Spurs and other clubs, too – but he is so far wide of the mark about Champions League qualification being the be-all-and-end-all. He’s spent far too much time in the company of the beancounters rather than supporters.
