Newcastle’s move for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris has collapsed on deadline day, according to Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards.

He made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Thursday morning, and said this would have a knock-on effect on Isaac Hayden.

Hayden has made it clear that he wants to leave Newcastle for personal reasons, but has had a move blocked before.

Now it looks like that could be set to happen again, which will be extremely frustrating for the Newcastle player.

OPINION

This is a blow for Newcastle and especially for Hayden who will be beyond frustrated if he doesn’t get his deadline day move. It’s still looking like it will be a good day overall for Newcastle, with the transfer record likely to be broken for MLS attacker Miguel Almiron, and Antonio Barreca has arrived for his medical too. There’s no word yet as to why the Samaris deal has gone awry, but we should get more information this morning. Out of the three, this is the one that Newcastle fans will be least bothered about, although Samaris – a 33-cap international – would have been a solid addition. There’s still the possibility of more though, with Sky Sports reporting that another body could be arriving this afternoon in what they say could be a “busy day” for Newcastle. That’s a real turn up for fans after it looked like they might go another window without making a significant signing.
