Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign French defensive pair Valentin Rosier and Kenny Lala, according to France Football.

Magpies’ manager Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his desire to bring in reinforcements for his back line during the January transfer window, and it is understood that the Ligue 1 duo are of particular interest to him.

Both players tend to operate as right-backs, but both are capable of playing on the left side of defence as well – a position Benitez is particularly keen to strengthen.

At 22, Rosier is considered a ‘great asset’ by current club Dijon, according to the report, with the side turning down a summer approach from Lille for his services.

Lala currently represents Strasbourg, and has been directly involved in nine goals this season – scoring three and assisting six.

Good move for Newcastle?

Either one of these players would be a great signing for Newcastle, but Rosier in particular could be a real find. The 22-year-old has bags of potential, and is a regular for France’s youth international set up. Given the calibre of players the national side can boast, that is no mean feat, and if Newcastle could secure his services it would be a real steal. Lala too would be a good acquisition, and at 27 offers more experience than Rosier. His attacking prowess is impressive, and in a side that is crying out for goals, could be a huge asset.

Likely to happen?

Bringing in Rosier in particular could be difficult. Dijon are clearly determined to keep a hold of their young talent, and if Mike Ashley isn’t willing to push the boat out too far, the Toon Army might struggle to lure him to England. Lala feels like a more viable option, but his impressive form has no doubt raised his valuation in the eyes of his bosses. As with all things football these days, it will be a matter of money. If Newcastle are willing to part with the cash then either of these deals could happen, but if the Magpies are conservative in their spending then neither of them will ever get off the ground.
