COMMENTARY
Daily Star journalist Aaron Stokes reported via his personal Twitter on Saturday that Newcastle United were in talks over taking Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris on loan. The reporter revealed that a £500,000 loan fee was being discussed and noted that the 29-year-old’s contract expired in the summer. Upon hearing about the talks, lots of Newcastle United fans reacted on Twitter to share their opinion and it was fair to say they were divided. Some focused on the fact the Magpies were being linked with taking another player on loan rather than buying him, while others were happy to be associated with Samaris. The defensive midfielder has barely featured for Benfica this season, he has made only seven appearances, and it’s easy to see why some Magpies below question whether he’ll be fit enough to hit the ground running if recruited. Samaris is clearly a talented player but it does seem like the Magpies are pursuing him as he is a cheap option as Benfica will likely be willing to part with for a fee, even if it’s a loan, given his contract situation.
