Newcastle United coach Ben Dawson has revealed he is set for talks with starlet striker Elias Sorensen over a potential loan exit before the end of the January transfer window.

The Danish hitman has been starring for the Magpies’ under-23 side this season with his fine goal scoring form leading to some on Tyneside calling for his promotion to the senior squad.

However Dawson insists that the giant forward, who stands at 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) at just 19-years-old needs to be playing regular game time and confirmed that a temporary departure from St James’ Park could be on the cards.

He told the Chronicle: “We’ll speak before he goes away. It has to be the right place to go on loan – you saw tonight some of the strengths he has and some of the areas where he has to develop.

“He needs to play every week and the best place for him to go on loan is somewhere where there’s an experienced striker for him to learn from.”

Opinion

Newcastle might be lacking in the firepower stakes right now but they are absolutely right not to throw Sorensen into the deep end right now. The Magpies are involved in a relegation battle and the last thing the youngster needs is that sort of pressure on his shoulders. Regardless of what happens with the first team this season, Sorensen should just focus on developing himself as a footballer and the best way to do that is to be playing regular football at a level which tests you. For the Newcastle starlet, that will probably be League One or League Two and if he can start scoring goals at the rate he has been for the under-23s in senior football then he is well on the way to making a success of himself at St James’ Park. It is not going to be too long until the Toon Army see him among the first team, but it will probably not be this season.
