Newcastle United have refused to increase their offer for Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper report that the Magpies submitted a £16million bid for the 24-year-old, with the MLS club demanding £20million for their star man.

The Chronicle claim that Almiron’s agent, Daniel Campos, is now headed to Italy in an attempt to secure a move to Serie A for the Paraguay international.

It is said that United were also unwilling to pay a £4million agent fee on top of the £20million demands.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Yes.

Almiron would be the perfect player for Rafa Benitez to add to his squad this month, with the Magpies desperately in need of an attacking midfielder.

The Paraguayan playmaker has been on fire for Atlanta this season, with the MLS newcomers eventually winning the season-ending showpiece on the back of his efforts.

Likely to happen?

As expected for a while, no.

Newcastle have not broken their transfer record since 2005, when they paid £16.5million for Michael Owen.

That was never really likely to change this month, and their just under that mark at £16million proves that point exactly.
