Newcastle United are in pursuit of Monaco defender Antonio Barreca, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The reliable reporter, who works for Sky Sports Italy as stated in his personal Twitter bio, shared that the Magpies had set their sights on the 23-year-old left-back and there was a chance he could move clubs by switching leagues in this window.

Di Marzio reported that Barreca had a chance of making a move despite only joining Monaco in the summer from Italian club Torino.

Good move for Newcastle?

Yes, 100%.

The Magpies need a left-back at the club to at the very least provide Paul Dummett with competition and Barreca more than fits the bill.

The 23-year-old who appeared once in the Champions League for Monaco this season and made eight other appearances for them clearly has the tools to succeed at the Magpies.

Barreca loves to dribbling down the flanks, is sublime passer of the ball and loves to whip crosses into the box so he could be as much of an attacking threat as a defensive one for the Magpies if recruited.

Likely to happen?

With no offer on the table it’s hard not to doubt the Magpies signing a player like Barreca.

The left-footed flyer may not be a guaranteed fixture of Monaco’s first-team but he will still no doubt cost a pretty penny or too even if it’s a loan deal that is agreed, as after all Monaco only signed him in the summer.

So while it’s believable that the Magpies are looking at Barreca and that’s coming from a very reliable source, until an offer is submitted Magpies fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

However it’s worth noting that’s the case with any of their transfer dealings in the current window.
