Paul Merson has predicted an exodus of superstar Tottenham players this summer led by Christian Eriksen.
The high-profile pundit claimed Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld are set to follow the 26-yr-old playmaker out of the exit door, and even claimed Harry Kane could follow suit.
Merson delivered a less than upbeat verdict on Spurs as he assessed whether Mauricio Pochettino should accept a possible offer from Manchester United.
“You got to weigh it all up,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Spurs have almost moved into their new stadium but Christian Eriksen looks like he could be on his way, that would be a massive loss.
“Danny Rose has not signed a contract, it would be a loss if he goes. And then there’s Toby Alderweireld, who has signed an extension but that only means his transfer fee is worth more.
“If they all go the squad looks thin. Real Madrid are in crisis – fifth in the league and miles behind Barcelona – something is going to change there and who are they going to come and look for? Who is one of the best centre forwards in the world? Harry Kane.”
Spurs fans would be crying into their pints if Merson’s prediction comes to fruition. They would just about accept losing Toby Alderweireld if a club triggers the £25million release clause in his contract that comes into effect in the summer window, bitter a pill as that would be. But, megastars Eriksen and Kane? Definitely not. They have been two of the lynchpins of the Pochettino transformation of the team from Premier League also-rans to established Champions League outfit and regular title challengers. Rose has also been much improved in recent times after 18 months of injury and poor form, and there are signs he is back to his 2015 and 2016 stellar best. Some of the Tottenham faithful will laugh off Merson’s prediction as that of a bitter ex-Gooner, but they shouldn’t. The pundit knows his onions and it would only take the exit of Pochettino to lead to the dismantling of the brilliant team he has built.
