OPINION
A rumour spread around social media like wildfire in the build-up to Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City that Andrew Robertson was set to miss the match as his wife had gone into labour. That proved to be unfounded, but plenty of supporters sweated buckets before the left-back took his usual place in the starting XI. Little wonder. The Scot is the outstanding left-back in the Premier League and did as much as anyone to stop his side succumbing to their first defeat in the league this season. On a night when City could not have been more up for it, and Liverpool were tested to the absolute limits, Robertson was immense. He extinguished the considerable threat of Raheem Sterling with a rock-solid performance of astute positioning, timing and awareness, highlighted by some expert tackles in his own box. Moreover, Robertson was a key outlet on the overlap and set up the equaliser for Roberto Firmino with a superb volleyed cross. Supporters of Liverpool went wild for their ‘Braveheart’.

Positives tonight for #LFC: Alisson, Robertson, Van Dijk, Fabinho and Firmino. Could easily have drawn or even won the game had luck been on our side. The most difficult fixture of the season is over. 4 points ahead.

Didn’t go our way but that was a cracking game of football. City excellent. Fernandinho MOTM in my opinion, the baldy twat ?????? Aguero’s finish absolutely delicious. Robertson outstanding; won every 1v1 vs Sterling tonight #LFC #MCFC

Robertson and TAA were immense, VVD had another 10/10 game for me, Alison made some great saves, Worldie by Aguero to score, once Fabinho came on we bossed the midfield, he has to start every match now for me. #LFC #STILLTOP pic.twitter.com/KdcBDcaNnw
